Low-Vision Rehabilitationfor the Visually Impaired
What Is Low Vision?
Low vision is any visual impairment that cannot be corrected with traditional glasses, contact lenses, medications, or surgeries. This type of vision loss can interfere with daily living activities, such as seeing medicine bottles, reading mail or newspapers, or performing hobbies and occupations.
Here is where Granbury Eye Clinic comes into the picture.
Is Legal Blindness the Same As Low Vision?
People who are “legally blind” have low vision, but not all low-vision patients are “legally blind.” Low-vision patients often have usable vision that can be enhanced with low-vision magnification aids. Both low-vision and legally blind patients can benefit from low-vision evaluations.
Common Causes of Low Vision:
- Macular Degeneration: Macular degeneration is an age-related condition that is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. Patients experience loss of their central to detailed vision leading to low vision
- Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetes may cause blood vessels in the eye to leak, causing blurred vision or permanent, scattered areas of vision loss
- Glaucoma: Glaucoma is the damage to the optic nerve most commonly due to increased internal eye pressure. In the severe stages, tunnel vision and loss of high-contrast vision may cause low vision
- Cataracts: Cataract is the clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye due to aging, injury, or disease causing generalized vision loss. In healthy eyes, cataracts can be surgically removed to restore vision. However, if cataract surgery is contraindicated, the generalized vision loss can lead to low vision
